Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain was an alternative rock icon best known as the lead vocalist and frontman of the Washington-based grunge trio Nirvana. Performing alongside bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, Cobain became one of the most influential figures in rock history. He was also the father of visual artist Frances Bean Cobain, his only child born in August 1992 with Hole frontwoman Courtney Love.

In the spring and summer of 1991, prior to the global explosion of grunge and their landmark album Nevermind, Cobain and Nirvana toured Pacific Northwest clubs to refine raw material. During a packed April 1991 concert at Seattle's OK Hotel, Cobain debuted unreleased songs live for the first time, including the public premiere of Smells Like Teen Spirit alongside tracks like Breed and Drain You.

Decades after Cobain's career with Nirvana, the non-active group continues to earn high-profile honors for its groundbreaking contributions to pop culture. In 2026, MTV announced that Nirvana would receive the Video Vanguard Award at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, making them one of only nine groups in the history of the broadcast to earn the lifetime tribute.
