The MTV Video Music Awards, also known as the VMAs, is an annual music award ceremony and television broadcast honoring standout recording artists, musical groups, and music videos. The event features competitive fan-voted awards across various musical genres and categories, along with prestigious lifetime honors presented to iconic acts.

For the 2026 broadcast, the ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. A major milestone of the 2026 event includes presenting the Video Vanguard Award to alt-rock legends Nirvana. Nirvana represents only the ninth group in the history of the broadcast to receive the lifetime honor, becoming the first group recognized since 2003 and the first non-active group celebrated since The Beatles.

Coverage of the ceremony highlights intense fan engagement and social media chatter surrounding its social categories. Fan voting opens online for high-profile categories such as Best Group, where prominent K-pop stars and emerging international acts compete directly. Nominees for the Best Group trophy include global hitmakers BTS and BLACKPINK alongside breakout sensations CORTIS and KATSEYE.
