About God of War
God of War is an upcoming live-action fantasy drama series based on the popular video game franchise of the same name. Produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television for Prime Video, the serialized television adaptation centers on the mythic Spartan warrior Kratos.
Plans to adapt the gaming property into a live-action series were initially floated in the spring of 2022. Following behind-the-scenes creative shake-ups and adjustments that temporarily slowed progress, production restarted in earnest around the start of January 2026, when active casting efforts ramped up to bring the franchise to streaming screens.
Casting for the central role of Kratos underwent several shifts before filming began. Actor Ryan Hurst was initially selected to play the character but had to step away after suffering a serious on-set injury. Dave Bautista subsequently finalized a deal to star as Kratos and began intensive weight training for the physically demanding role.
