Zooey Deschanel Admits 'New Girl' Filming Schedule Was 'Dangerous'

Playing Jessica Day made Zooey Deschanel a primetime comedy icon, but starring on *New Girl* took a heavy physical toll. The actress recently opened up about the punishing schedule required to shoot the hit sitcom, describing her level of sleep deprivation as downright hazardous. Reconnecting with former co-star Jake Johnson on his podcast, *We're Here to Help*, Deschanel reflected on the demanding seven-season run that aired from 2011 to 2018. During the sit-down, Johnson brought up the brutal production hours, prompting Deschanel to agree that the workload was out of control. She revealed that the long days frequently left her struggling to stay conscious behind the wheel after wrapping on set.

According to Deschanel, the studio did not provide drivers or transportation for the cast, forcing her to commute home while running on complete exhaustion. She recalled nearly nodding off in her car after grueling shoots. To stay awake during those late-night drives, she relied on her mother, who would wake up in the middle of the night just to chat on the phone and keep her focused on the road. The constant fatigue extended beyond her commute and directly impacted her work on camera. Deschanel remembered one instance where she broke down in tears for a scene effortlessly, simply because her body was completely depleted from lack of rest.
