Sports Team Return With Wild New Pub-Inspired Single 'Billy'

Indie outfit Sports Team is charging back into the music landscape with a raucous new offering. The Mercury Prize-nominated UK group has officially unleashed their latest single, "Billy," bringing fans a high-octane dose of the sharp, gritty guitar rock that originally launched them into the indie spotlight. This fresh release represents the band's newest piece of music following the rollout of their third full-length album, *Boys These Days*, which arrived last May. That record cycle was rounded out by the wistful single "Medium Machine," but with "Billy," the six-piece band is trading nostalgia for pure, unadulterated chaotic energy.

According to band songwriter Rob Knaggs, the blistering track serves as a dedicated tribute to unpredictable weeknight drinking binges. Knaggs described the new cut as a heartfelt homage to getting intensely, recklessly tipsy inside a classic carpeted local pub on a random Tuesday night, perfectly capturing the messy charm of British nightlife culture. Frontman Alex Rice leads the charge on the song, combining soul-infused melodic hooks with aggressive, jagged guitar work. The track intentionally leans into a heavier, unpolished soundscape that echoes the explosive dynamic of the band's acclaimed 2020 debut album, *Deep Down Happy*.

To capture that genuine live performance tension, Sports Team chose to record the single live at London's iconic RAK Studios during the early weeks of summer. The group worked alongside producers Seth Evans and Adele Phillips to craft a tracking environment that favored spontaneous energy over clinical studio perfection. Knaggs noted that working live in the studio felt like a total return to how the band forged their very first record. The songwriter explained that the group kept the entire creation process fast, loose, and extraordinarily loud from start to finish. Lyrically, the song dives straight into frantic night-out storytelling. Rice belts out lines confronting the titular character while painting a vivid picture of someone's dad ordering round after round of shots at the bar while bathroom lights flicker overhead. With "Billy" now available, Sports Team continues to solidify their reputation as one of the UK indie scene's most rowdy and unpredictable forces.
