Mastodon Drummer Brann Dailor Opens Up About Double Grief, Brent Hinds Death, and New Album 'Marrow Deep'

Heavy metal icons Mastodon are entering a raw and deeply emotional new chapter. Half a decade after releasing their previous record *Hushed And Grim*, the veteran group is set to drop their latest album, *Marrow Deep*, this coming Friday, August 28. However, the path leading up to this release has been defined by overwhelming personal tragedy and upheaval for the band members. In a fresh interview with *NME*, drummer and co-vocalist Brann Dailor opened up about the heavy emotional turmoil that shaped the creation of the record. Tensions had already hit a high point last March when the group officially severed ties with founding guitarist and co-vocalist Brent Hinds. Following Hinds' departure, Mastodon brought in guitarist Nick Johnston to step into the role and keep momentum going.

Not long after the lineup shift, tragedy struck the band in rapid succession. News broke that Hinds had been killed in a devastating motorcycle accident. The sudden death of their longtime collaborator sent shockwaves through the group and their fanbase alike. To make matters even more harrowing for Dailor, he was simultaneously coping with the loss of his mother, who passed away around that exact same timeframe. Faced with compounding sorrow, the remaining band members made the decision to channel their overwhelming heartbreak directly into their work.
