Former Queen Bassist Barry Mitchell Dies as Fans Pay Tribute

Rock history fans are mourning the loss of Barry Mitchell, an early bass player for Queen who performed with the legendary band during their formative days before they skyrocketed to global superstardom. The news was confirmed on Facebook by Queen’s official archivist, Greg Brooks, who shared his grief with the fan community. Brooks noted that the team had just received the terribly sad news of Mitchell's passing, remembering him as a missed presence who frequently delighted attendees at fan conventions with rare insights and fascinating anecdotes about the group's early era. Mitchell joined the iconic rock outfit in August 1970, taking over duties as Queen’s second bass player following the exit of founding member Mike Grose. During his short stint with the band, he performed live across England alongside a young Freddie Mercury and the rest of the original crew, playing notable shows in cities like Liverpool.

While in the lineup, Mitchell contributed to the band's developing sound, reportedly originating the initial basslines for early tracks like "Liar" and "Son And Daughter." However, his run with the group came to an end in January 1971—a full two years before Queen released their self-titled debut album in 1973. The reason for his exit was simple: he walked away because he just wasn't passionate enough about their musical direction at the time. Reflecting on his brief time in the spotlight during a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone, Mitchell admitted that he failed to foresee just how massive the group would eventually become. He noted that during those early gigs, they were nowhere near the beloved cult sensation fans know today, admitting it was crazy to admit in hindsight that he simply didn't see their vast potential.

After Mitchell packed up his instrument and moved on, Queen briefly filled the bass slot with Doug Bogie. That setup was short-lived, eventually opening the door for John Deacon to step in and lock down the permanent spot in the roster. Though his time on stage with Freddie Mercury and company lasted only a few months, Mitchell earned an undeniable place in rock history.
