Darkwing Duck Recast! Voice Legend Jim Cummings Says Disney Dumped Him From Reboot

Nostalgia hit a major roadblock for classic '90s animation fans. Jim Cummings, the legendary voice behind Disney's iconic *Darkwing Duck*, has confirmed that he will not be returning to play the feathered crime-fighter in the studio's long-brewing series reboot. Speaking with *Collider* while attending the premiere of *Coyote vs. Acme*, the veteran voice actor shared the surprising update. According to Cummings, he actually recorded a test pilot for the revival a few years ago to gauge the project's potential, and the response from everyone involved was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Despite that early momentum, Disney ultimately opted to take the revamped series in an entirely new direction with a fresh voice cast. Cummings revealed that executives are replacing both his titular hero and sidekick Launchpad McQuack, a character originally voiced by actor Terry McGovern in the classic cartoon.

Cummings did not hide his surprise regarding the studio's sudden recasting decisions. "I hope they get … everything they deserve," the performer quipped, adding that the development felt "crazy" and that he was at a loss for words over being sidelined from his signature superhero role. The news comes as a dramatic shift from earlier statements. As recently as March, Cummings suggested during an interview with *ScreenRant* that he was still actively involved with the project, expressing optimism about teaming up with the new creative team behind the scenes. First reported back in 2020, the upcoming *Darkwing Duck* reboot remains in active development with Hollywood comedy duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg producing under their Point Grey banner.

Cummings stands as one of the most celebrated and prolific voice actors in modern entertainment. In addition to defining the heroic Drake Mallard in the original 1991 series, his legendary career includes voicing Disney staples like Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, alongside Looney Tunes favorite the Tasmanian Devil. Disney has not yet announced who will be stepping into the cape and mask of the terror that flaps in the night.
