Bassam Tariq Bounces Back With New Movie After Marvel's 'Blade' Collapse
Former 'Blade' director Bassam Tariq traded MCU development hell for his new feature 'Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother'.

Walking away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe might send some filmmakers into hiding, but Bassam Tariq turned his comic book heartbreak into an artistic win. Before setting out to make his new feature *Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother*, the Pakistani-American director was handed the keys to one of Disney’s most hyped comic reboots: *Blade*, starring two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali. Tariq originally built his reputation on critically acclaimed independent projects. He co-directed the revered documentary *These Birds Walk* alongside Omar Mullick and later helmed the Riz Ahmed-led drama *Mogul Mowgli*. Landing the director role for a massive Marvel Studios tentpole felt like a major Hollywood breakthrough. Fans were desperate to see a modern take on the famous half-vampire hero, who was originally created by comic legends Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan and popularized on the big screen by Wesley Snipes across a beloved trilogy (and a recent throwback cameo in *Deadpool & Wolverine*).
Why did Bassam Tariq leave the Blade movie?
Production on the MCU reboot hit serious hurdles behind the scenes. Marvel had even teased Ali’s voice in a brief post-credits scene for 2021’s *Eternals*, stoking excitement for the upcoming solo flick. However, creative friction and development delays derailed the timeline. Just about a year after signing on, Tariq officially exited the project in 2022. The studio tried replacing him with another director, but the production continued to sputter until it eventually stalled out entirely. The failure to launch hit the studio hard. Marvel chief Kevin Feige later confessed that he felt like a massive loser for failing to bring the iconic daywalker project to the finish line after so much buildup.
What is Bassam Tariq doing now?
Instead of staying trapped in Marvel's development hell, Tariq picked up his camera and moved on to his next creative chapter. He funneled his focus directly into making *Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother*, proving that leaving a blockbuster universe behind can sometimes be the best decision for an artist's career.
