Amy Taylor Joins Viagra Boys On Stage For First-Ever Live Duet Of ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’

Festival goers at FORWARDS in Bristol witnessed pure indie-punk royalty collide over the weekend. Amyl & The Sniffers frontwoman Amy Taylor made a surprise appearance during Viagra Boys’ set on Clifton Downs, giving the UK crowd a historic live moment. The surprise crossover marked the very first time the two acts have ever performed their beloved joint cover of John Prine’s classic duet, "In Spite Of Ourselves," together on a concert stage.

Taylor emerged during the Swedish outfit's set to belt out the twangy, high-octane cover. While the duo originally recorded the track four years ago, scheduling and distance kept them from ever singing it together live until the Bristol festival appearance. Shortly after leaving the stage, Taylor celebrated the milestone moment on social media. She jumped on Instagram to share fan clips and recap the unforgettable festival moment. "Against all odds honey you’re the big door prize," Taylor wrote on her feed, quoting the track's famous lyrics. She went on to explain that she teamed up with Viagra Boys in Bristol to bring their studio version to life for the first time ever, writing that singing alongside frontman Sebastian Murphy was an absolute treat.

The original track was created by legendary American folk artist John Prine in 1999 as a duet alongside Iris DeMent, serving as the title song for his 13th studio record. In 2020, Viagra Boys re-imagined the tender duet into a chaotic, lo-fi punk anthem, calling on Taylor to handle DeMent’s iconic vocal parts. The fiery collaboration eventually found a home on Viagra Boys’ second album, *Welfare Jazz*, released in 2021. Murphy previously revealed that hearing Prine’s original tune instantly triggered an urge to record a cover, emphasizing that Taylor’s wildly unique voice made her the ultimate co-star for the revival. Fans in attendance captured footage of the unannounced duet as the two singers bounced off each other's chaotic energy. The live performance finally delivered on a fan-favorite track that had been sitting on playlists for years without a proper concert outing.
