Prima Facie

Prima Facie is a dramatic feature film adapted from Suzie Miller's 2019 theatrical play. The legal drama centers on Tessa, a brilliant defense attorney known for her fierce cross-examinations. Throughout her career, she spends her time dissecting witness testimonies, securing acquittals for men accused of sexual assault, and placing her complete trust in the judicial process.

The story takes a devastating turn when Tessa is sexually assaulted by a colleague, causing her life and professional confidence to fracture. Thrust onto the witness stand, she is forced to endure the brutal cross-examinations and skepticism she once inflicted on others while confronting systemic failures of the justice system from a terrifyingly vulnerable vantage point.

Starring Cynthia Erivo in the lead role made famous on stage by Jodie Comer, the movie adapts the original one-woman show into a full feature film. Prima Facie held its premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, where audience members responded with a thunderous standing ovation for Erivo's emotional performance.
