Aaliyah Haughton, known professionally as Aaliyah and widely remembered as the Princess of R&B, was a globally acclaimed musical artist and actor. Emerging into the public eye as a teenager, she built a groundbreaking career defined by smooth R&B vocals, innovative production, and a lasting impact on pop culture and fashion. Her early music success featured major chart-topping releases including the hit track "Back & Forth."
In addition to her success on music charts and video countdowns, she seamlessly transitioned into feature films. Director Michael Rymer recalled how she dedicated herself to securing the role of the ancient vampire queen Akasha in the 2002 gothic horror movie Queen of the Damned, bonding over Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles during a meeting with Rymer and her brother, Rashad Haughton.
Her life ended tragically in August 2001 at the age of 22 when an overloaded twin-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Marsh Harbour Airport in the Bahamas, where she had just completed filming her "Rock the Boat" music video. Years after her death, former collaborators such as backup dancer Carmit Bachar have reflected on her final moments, while legal battles between her uncle Barry Hankerson and cousin Jomo Hankerson have brought financial and personal disputes over her legacy into court.
