Paul McCartney Warns Director Over Beatles Biopic Height Inaccuracy
The rock icon opens up to Amy Poehler about the key physical detail Hollywood constantly gets wrong about the Fab Four.

Paul McCartney is setting the record straight before cameras start rolling on the next generation of Beatles movies. The legendary musician recently revealed that he has already contacted director Sam Mendes with a very specific warning about how the band should look on screen. Speaking on a recent podcast episode with host Amy Poehler, the former bassist for the Fab Four addressed a persistent Hollywood inaccuracy that has bothered him for years. When Poehler asked him to clarify which bandmate was the tallest between himself, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, McCartney cleared up the misconception immediately.

McCartney explained that despite what previous films depicted, the musicians were practically identical in stature. He noted that while Starr was slightly shorter than the rest, promotional photographs consistently show the four of them matching in height. The issue hit a nerve during the production of the 2009 biographical film *Nowhere Boy*, which was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. In that release, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson portrayed Lennon opposite Thomas Brodie-Sangster as McCartney. Because the actors had a noticeable height gap, McCartney felt his onscreen persona was framed inaccurately as physically smaller and weaker, even being knocked to the ground during one scene. He recalled protesting to the filmmaker at the time that the depiction was completely untrue.

Are four separate Beatles biopics currently in development?
Determined not to repeat history, McCartney admitted he reached out directly to Mendes, who is currently tackling an ambitious slate of four individual feature films dedicated to each member of the legendary group. McCartney texted the filmmaker with a direct request to avoid changing the physical proportions of the bandmates. With production moving forward on the landmark movie project, McCartney hopes his upfront advice ensures the new cinematic retellings stay true to real life—at least when it comes to standing side by side.
