Julia Fox Is Directing Her First Feature Film Set in New York City

Julia Fox is officially taking command behind the lens. The multi-hyphenate star is preparing to make her feature film directorial debut with an ambitious new project deeply rooted in her home city of New York. In addition to taking the helm as director, the *Uncut Gems* breakout performer also authored the script entirely on her own. The upcoming feature film is being described as a gritty, realistic coming-of-age story that leans into the raw and unvarnished energy of the metropolis she grew up in.

While specific narrative details and lead character descriptions are currently being kept under wraps, production on the feature is already making swift moves in Gotham. Reports indicate that local casting directors are actively searching for background actors across the tri-state area to populate the project's scenes, ensuring the overall atmosphere remains authentically grounded in true New York culture. This directorial announcement marks the latest major evolution in Fox's wide-ranging entertainment career. She first captivated international moviegoers in 2019 when she starred as Julia De Fiore opposite Adam Sandler in the Safdie brothers' acclaimed crime thriller *Uncut Gems*. Since that high-octane breakout performance, Fox has maintained a prominent presence across film, television, high fashion, and book publishing. Fox has also built a reputation as a prominent pop-culture figure who regularly commands internet attention with her boundary-pushing fashion choices and transparent commentary. Her shift to film directing represents a significant pivot toward established film craft while preserving the gritty, city-focused aesthetic that first put her on the map.

BUZZBEAT

Fox is taking complete creative authority for this upcoming effort, pulling double duty as both the primary screenwriter and director. While this project represents her first time directing a full-length narrative feature, Fox previously gained valuable behind-the-camera experience when she co-directed the short film *Fantasy Girls* back in 2021. Taking charge of both writing and directing allows the star to translate her unapologetic artistic vision straight onto the big screen. Her past creative work, including her candid 2023 memoir *Down the Drain*, frequently drew upon her real-life experiences growing up in Manhattan and navigating the city's chaotic youth subcultures. With local background casting currently underway in New York City, further details concerning lead casting announcements, production schedules, and an official release date are anticipated to emerge in the coming months.
