Disney is putting Goliath and his clan back to sleep. The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the beloved 1990s animated series *Gargoyles* is officially dead in the water at Disney+, according to a new report from Variety. Fans who were hoping to see stone warriors waking up above Manhattan will have to keep waiting. The project first made headlines back in 2023 when the streaming giant teamed up with horror filmmaker James Wan’s production house, Atomic Monster. Screenwriter Gary Dauberman, famous for his work on the *It* films and the *Annabelle* franchise, was tapped to write, executive produce, and showrun the series. It promised to bring a darker, more dramatic twist to the iconic weekend-cartoon staple.

While Disney has not issued an official public statement explaining the decision, industry sources confirmed to Variety that the series is no longer in active development. Streaming platforms have spent the last year scaling back ambitious high-budget pitch concepts in favor of safer bets, and this nostalgic fantasy revival appears to be the latest casualty of that strategy shift. The original *Gargoyles* animated show ran for three seasons from 1994 to 1997, earning a massive cult following for its surprisingly mature storytelling, Shakespearean drama, and dark urban fantasy vibes. It followed a band of ancient Scottish warriors who turned to stone by day and protected modern-day New York City by night after being freed from a thousand-year curse.

For years, rumors of a live-action take on the franchise have floated around Hollywood. Back in the late 2010s, Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele reportedly pitched his own movie concept to Disney, though that project also failed to take off. The news of James Wan’s TV adaptation was seen as the closest the property had ever come to actually returning to the screen in live-action form. With the Atomic Monster version now officially scrapped, the stone statues remain firmly frozen.
