'Aquamarine' Sequel Series Brings Back Jake McDorman and Emma Roberts

Y2K beach babes, rejoice! Disney+ is diving back into the deep end with its upcoming *Aquamarine* follow-up, and some iconic faces are officially boarding the reboot train. Jake McDorman is set to reprise his role as Raymond, the dreamy beachside hero who stole hearts in the original 2006 fantasy comedy. Two decades after the original film charmed teen audiences, Raymond has traded in his summer romance for fatherhood. McDorman will star alongside newcomer Kenzi Richardson, who lands the lead role of Coral — the half-mermaid offspring of Raymond and the titular sea creature Aquamarine.

According to reports, the new pilot picks up roughly twenty years after the events of the movie. Raymond is now operating as a solo parent, raising Coral after her mother mysteriously vanished. When the teenager relocates to a picture-perfect coastal village, she sets out to solve the secret surrounding her mom's sudden disappearance and comes to terms with her own hidden siren roots. It remains a mystery whether the original mermaid herself will turn up on screen. However, another key member of the 2006 squad is returning to the fold. Emma Roberts, who starred in the original classic alongside JoJo, is stepping behind the camera as an executive producer and will also make a guest appearance, stepping back into the shoes of Claire Brown.

Briella Guiza, Theodore Dalton, and Annika Reese have all signed on as series regulars for the project. The project boasts major talent behind the scenes as well. *The Bold Type* creator Sarah Watson is penning the pilot script and serving as an executive producer. Original producer Susan Cartsonis is back to produce, while director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum returns to steer the ship once again. Disney+ originally greenlit the pilot order earlier this summer, sparking massive excitement among fans who grew up on the beloved Y2K flick.
