Sterling K. Brown Cast Alongside Tom Hanks in Baseball Comedy 'The Comebacker'

Tom Hanks is officially heading back to the dugout, and he is bringing major star power along for the ride. Acclaimed actor Sterling K. Brown has signed on to join Hanks in the upcoming Sony Pictures feature *The Comebacker*, expanding an already stacked cast for the highly anticipated sports comedy. The upcoming movie will be helmed by director Marielle Heller. This project marks a reunion for Heller and Hanks, who previously teamed up on the acclaimed 2019 Fred Rogers biographical drama *A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood*. Sony secured the rights to the movie after emerging victorious from a tense studio bidding war that involved several major Hollywood competitors.

Adapted from a short story by celebrated author and Pulitzer Prize finalist Dave Eggers, the storyline centers on an aging sports journalist. As the veteran beat reporter navigates the later stages of his career, his deep love for his profession, his home team, and the sport itself is suddenly reignited following the surprise arrival of a gifted new pitcher. This project also continues a long-standing creative relationship between Hanks and Eggers. The two previously collaborated on the big-screen adaptation of *A Hologram for the King*. Sony has officially slated *The Comebacker* to arrive in movie theaters on July 30, 2027. The mid-summer launch date carries a fun touch of nostalgia, arriving exactly thirty-five years after Hanks' timeless 1992 baseball hit *A League of Their Own* premiered in July.

BUZZBEAT

Brown and Hanks are joined by a formidable roster of co-stars. The project already features *Masters of the Air* breakout Callum Turner, alongside Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson and veteran actress Amy Madigan. Even more high-profile talent could be locking in deals soon. Reports suggest that chart-topping music sensation Bad Bunny and Oscar nominee Colman Domingo are both currently in talks for potential roles in the film, which could add even more star strength to the ensemble lineup. The project is backed by serious industry heavyweights behind the camera as well. Gary Goetzman is producing for Playtone alongside Hanks, while Leah Holzer produces through her Defiant by Nature banner alongside Heller. Major League Baseball has also officially signed on to collaborate on the production to ensure an authentic on-field look and feel.
